Aeolian harps & homemade things

INSTRUMENT BUILDING

Now accepting commissions for bespoke instruments. Contact me at joe (at) firstterracerecords.com and we can talk ideas, sounds, materials & costs. Below are some examples of past projects - some string things, some wind things, some reed things. Many more things constructed but lost / gifted / broken / stolen before they made it onto camera.

Aeolian harps

from left to right: aeolian #1 (The Palace residency, Nysa, Poland) aeolian #2 (SVS residency, Montemor-o-novo, Portugal) aeolian #3 (for Dartmoor and it’s lovers) aeolian #4 (for tempelhofer feld, Berlin)

Flutes

(1) - Two-tone fipple flute from copper, one side with a sliding tuner. Great for making dissonant drones (2) - Overtone flute from steel (3) - Scrap metal flutes made with Dylan Kerr as part of our collaboration at Pillkaller Allee 2 - a defunct psychiatric hospital in Berlin.

Reeds

Kind of like a cross between a trombone and a bagpipe, this one, with a handmade reed based around a bagpipe reed design. Double flute being explored for the first time by Saoli from Takkiduda!

String things

You can basically turn anything into a string thing somehow. If you have strings. These are mostly bits of trash wood, for use with homemade guitar pickups (metal strings only) and piezos, as they don’t have resonating bodies. Nice neat acoustic things are possible also, but take more time.
